Stefan Genten was born in Aachen in 1968. He completed his studies in business administration and economics, political science and sociology at RWTH Aachen in 1993 as a "Diplom-Kaufmann" (≈ Master of Business Administration). Stefan Genten then acquired his initial professional experience at Rheinbraun AG in Cologne, initially as a commercial trainee, then as Head of Corporate Accounting.

In 1998 he moved to the RWE AG corporate headquarters in Essen, where he initially worked in the central division of Corporate Controlling as the Head of Subsidiary Controlling for the RWE Construction division (Hochtief Group), and subsequently also as the Head of Corporate Planning / Corporate Policy. From July 2000 on he was the Deputy Vice President of the central division of Corporate Controlling.

In June 2001 Stefan Genten moved to Grünenthal GmbH as a "Prokurist" (≈ authorized signatory) and Vice President for Finance and Controlling. From January 2005 on, he held worldwide accountability as the Chief Financial Officer of Grünenthal Group, above all for the Finance, Controlling, Legal and IT divisions. Since May 2009 Stefan Genten has been the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Grünenthal Group with worldwide accountability for Finance, Controlling, Legal, IT, Industrial Operations and Global Product Supply.
