New PAIN Compendium provides up-to-date information on pain and its therapy to support healthcare practitioners’ daily work

CHANGE PAIN® presents new international textbook on pain management at EULAR Congress

Berlin, 6 June, 2012 – The CHANGE PAIN® initiative1 today presents the PAIN Compendium – a new tool being part of the PAIN EDUCATION program – on the occasion of the Annual European Congress of the European League against Rheumatism (EULAR), taking place in Berlin from 6 to 9 June. The PAIN Compendium is a comprehensive international textbook about pain and its therapy, intended for healthcare professionals regularly facing patients with pain in their daily practice, as well as healthcare professionals and students with an interest in pain. With the PAIN Compendium, healthcare practitioners receive a comprehensive insight into pain and its management supporting them in understanding their pain patients’ needs and developing individual treatment plans.

Patients with severe chronic pain need better treatment so that the high burden of pain for society can be minimized.[2] The PAIN Compendium is a valuable source of information for healthcare professionals and students interested in pain as well as physicians facing patients with pain in their daily practice. The content provided within the textbook or the DVD enables state-of-the-art pain management by giving the reader the opportunity to learn more about the basics of pain therapy as well as the current challenges and latest research findings. Animations and videos are used to supplement information about the underlying mechanisms of pain, pain assessment and the patient perspective.

PAIN Compendium combines basic information and special cases

The PAIN Compendium begins with the basics of pain management and moves on to explain pain physiology, subsequent therapeutic measures and interdisciplinary approaches. In the chapter treatment modalities, readers find insights into therapies including the novel therapeutic class MOR-NRI. The clinical states section introduces different indications such as back pain, neuropathic pain or rheumatological pain, providing basic information on epidemiology, symptoms and current guidelines but also giving details of related diseases (e.g. postherpetic neuralgia) and their evaluation. Special cases focus on pain in the elderly or pain in children, exploring areas that are not necessarily well understood among healthcare practitioners.

Adding to the PAIN EDUCATION program

The new textbook is part of the interactive PAIN EDUCATION program, developed according to the recommendations of the international CHANGE PAIN® advisory board, and aiming to educate healthcare professionals about the management of chronic pain. So far, the program includes five electronic UEMS certified Continuing Medical Education (eCME) modules, with two further modules currently in development.

With 27 chapters and more than 400 pictures, the PAIN Compendium provides thorough insights on the basics of pain management, treatment modalities, different clinical states and special cases for interested healthcare professionals. The textbook was developed by international experts in the area of pain management from across Europe and edited by Dr Reinhard Sittl. Healthcare practitioners can access the PAIN Compendium free of charge on the CHANGE PAIN® website (www.change-pain.com) but are asked to register in order to ensure the user’s medical background. The PAIN Compendium will be available for the first time at the Grünenthal booth during the EULAR. Currently, the textbook is available in English and German, but more translations are under development.
