Duration of Pain

Pain can be distinguished into acute and chronic pain

Pain can be distinguished into acute and chronic pain. Acute pain is a part of the body's protective system. It acts as a warning signal of imminent or actual damage. Therefore, acute pain has an important function in maintaining or restoring physical integrity.

Chronic pain on the other hand is experienced in the absence of any tissue damage. Furthermore, its intensity may not be in proportion to the original injury. If the pain is no longer related to the triggering event, it has become a disease in its own right and should be specially treated1.
