Planet – What we do for a sustainable future

Grünenthal is committed to minimizing negative environmental impacts of its global operations. We focus on reducing emissions from production-related processes and minimising pollution across our operations and supply chain.

Climate change

We are committed to reducing our environmental footprint and aligning our climate action with the latest science. In 2025, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) officially approved Grünenthal’s near-term science-based emissions reduction target. This validation confirms that our climate ambition is aligned with keeping global temperature increase to 1.5°C, the highest level of ambition recognised by the SBTi.

Reducing emissions across operations and supply chain

Since 2024, all five Grünenthal manufacturing sites have been operating on 100% renewable electricity. We are also prioritising gas reduction projects, including the installation of heat pumps at our Aachen headquarters and Mitlödi site.

Building on these efforts within our own operations, we are now actively engaging suppliers, who account for over two-thirds of our Scope 3 emissions, to set their own science-based targets by 2028.

My Green Lab Certification

100% of Grünenthal’s research laboratories are certified by My Green Lab®. My Green Lab® is a non-profit organisation whose programme is recognised by the UN’s Race to Zero campaign, as a key benchmark for zero-carbon progress. It is widely regarded as the gold standard for lab sustainability worldwide.

Pollution

At Grünenthal, we are committed to actively preventing pollution and minimising environmental impact across our operations and supply chain. We recognise that emissions, waste and chemical residues can affect air, land and water quality, and we have put in place comprehensive strategies to address these challenges.

Managing pollution across sites

Across our sites, we have implemented strong pollution prevention and management practices. These include responsible resource use, such as integrating recycled materials into packaging processes at our Aachen site. Our supplier engagement also reflects this commitment, as we work closely with partners who share our values around environmental stewardship. To ensure consistent standards globally, we have established a wastewater framework that guides the management, sampling and reporting of wastewater quality in line with local regulations. These efforts are part of our ongoing journey to reduce pollution.
