Joining forces for enhanced patient outcomes - our approach to R&D

Scientists at Grünenthal leverage the latest groundbreaking research to create next-generation therapies that change the lives of patients with pain and adjacent conditions.

Innovators in Grünenthal’s laboratories take a truly patient-focused approach to their work. Our scientists develop promising new treatment options by identifying targets with the highest potential to address unmet medical needs. We pursue those targets holistically by applying our deep expertise across research areas and technology platforms.

Lifting the burden on patients and their families

Research teams at Grünenthal have developed industry-leading expertise in the pathophysiology of pain. This gives our scientists a wide range of capabilities, as well as an in-depth understanding of sensory biology and neuronal health – including neuronal hyperexcitability and hypoexcitability.

Our teams are leveraging those strengths to target disease areas beyond pain that share similar pathophysiological pathways. In this way, we aim to help even more patients worldwide.

Humanising research

Our R&D strategy targets four therapeutic areas with high unmet medical needs:

Pain.
Epilepsy.
Pruritis.
Neurodegenerative disorders.

Pioneering and patient-centric approach

R&D teams at Grünenthal have deep understanding of the underlying human biology involved in pain and adjacent conditions. This core capability enables our scientists to identify well validated and highly promising targets. They review novel assets as well as compounds from our libraries to determine whether they can be repurposed for new indications. In addition, Grünenthal acquires promising assets from other companies.

At all times, our innovators pursue a modality-agnostic model. We pursue targets holistically and seek to leverage a wide variety of modalities to maximise the probability of successfully developing treatments that make life better for patients. We also collaborate with leading institutions around the world to tap into the best science and technologies wherever they exist.

Building our genetic medicine platform

In our laboratories, expert teams leverage our strong capabilities and explore emerging research approaches to explore new ways of addressing unmet medical needs. As part of this approach, we are integrating genetic medicine methodologies into our established portfolio of small molecule treatments.

We place a particular emphasis on RNA therapeutics. These treatments enable precise design and offer a reversible but long-lasting impact. They may be suitable for modulating targets that are inaccessible to small molecules. In this way, we are opening up new ways of speeding up the development of new treatments.
