Meet the experts
The Pain Management Hub has been developed to support and raise awareness among primary care physicians regarding the responsible use of pain medication. This educational content has been developed in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary group of experts – each a healthcare professional involved in the management of patients with pain (see below) – and is based on their personal clinical experience as well as published literature.
Beatriz Craveiro Lopes – Anaesthesiologist, Portugal

Biography:
Dr Beatriz Craveiro Lopes is a specialist in anaesthesiology with a focus on pain medicine. She founded the Chronic Pain Unit at Hospital Garcia de Orta, Almada, Portugal and is a former director of the Multidisciplinary Pain Centre at Hospital Garcia de Orta. For six years, she served as an advisor for the Portuguese Association for the Study of Pain at The European Pain Federation.
Dr Jesus Porta Etessam – MD, PhD

Biography:
Dr. Jesús Porta-Etessam, MD, PhD - is the Head of section of Neurology at the San Carlos Clinical Hospital of Madrid, where he is one of the mentors of residents and board member of the Institute of Neurosciences. He is also a Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid and the elected President of the Spanish Neurological Society. He is the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Neurology and Neuroscience and also serves as a member of the editorial boards of several other scientific journals. He has published 200+ scientific papers, 300 conference papers and is a recipient of many honours and prizes. He is also actively involved in promotion of relationship between neuroscience and arts through activities such as ‘Art and Butterflies of the soul.’
Dr Argelia Lara-Solares – Anaesthesiologist

Biography:
Dr Argelia Lara-Solares is a specialist in anaesthesiology and pain medicine, working as an attending physician in the Cancer Centre at Médica Sur Hospital, Mexico City. Previously, Dr Lara-Solares was a professor and Head of the Department of Pain and Palliative Medicine at the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán. She is affiliated with various medical associations and has authored several publications in nationally and internationally recognised scientific journals on pain management.
Dr Elena Catala Puigbo – Anaesthesiologist

Biography:
Dr Elena Català Puigbò is a specialist in anaesthesiology and pain, leading the Unit of Anaesthesiology, Resuscitation and Pain Treatment and serving as Director of the pain clinic at Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Barcelona, where she is also President of the PAIN Commission. Dr Català Puigbò was President of the Catalan Pain Society between 2011 and 2015. She has authored numerous publications in national and international scientific journals and is a member of several editorial boards. Dr. Catala has received various awards throughout her career, among them the award for hospital professional excellence from the College of Doctors of Barcelona in 2017.
Dr Joanne O Brien – Advanced Nurse Practitioner

Biography:
Dr Joanne O'Brien-Kelly is a registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Pain Management working in Dublin, Ireland. Her role involves educating and supporting patients to develop strategies that allow them to live well despite their chronic pain.
Dr Silvio Brill – Anesthesiology and Pain Management

Biography:
Dr. Silviu Brill is a specialist in Anesthesiology and Pain Management, Director of the Institute for Pain Medicine, Tel Aviv Medical Center, Israel. His main research interest is Neuromodulation, Psychologic aspects of Chronic Pain postsurgical neuropathic pain, and Medical use of Cannabinoids.
Harald Bannies – General Practitioner, Germany

Biography:
Dr Harald Bannies is a family doctor and specialist in general medicine, practising in Solingen, Germany. He has a passion for delivering comprehensive patient care, with special interests in pain therapy, palliative medicine and psychotherapy.
Raul Marques Pereira – General Practitioner, Portugal

Biography:
Dr Raúl Marques Pereira is a specialist in general and family medicine at the Alto Minho Local Health Unit, Portugal. He founded and coordinates the Pain Study Group of the Portuguese Association of General and Family Medicine (APMGF), in addition to having founded the Chronic Pain Consultation at the Family Health Unit (USF) Lethes – the first pain consultation for primary healthcare in Portugal. He also has a keen interest in clinical research having published several articles and presented at national and international conferences.
Vittorio Schweiger – Anesthesiologist, Pain Therapist, Italy

Biography:
Prof. Vittorio Schweiger is a specialist in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care with a specific interest in Pain Medicine. He works in the Pain Therapy Centre of the University of Verona. His field of research is the diagnosis and treatment of complex pain syndromes such as neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and facial pain. He is currently the Secretary of the Italian Association for the Study of Pain (AISD), the Italian chapter of the IASP.
