Beyond the Ache:
Living with Pain

with Helene Anschütz

In the second episode of „Beyond the Ache“ it becomes tangible how pain is not only a medical condition but a lived experience. Listening to chronic pain advocate Helene Anschütz, we gain insights into the many ways chronic pain impacts daily life, realising how chronic pain is managed by the healthcare system, affects careers, personal relationships, and even gender.

About Helene Anschütz

Since the age of two, Helene Anschütz has been dealing with chronic pain. What began with eczema and migraines has led to a diagnosis of Morbus Bechterew, a rheumatic disease, in her twenties. This makes Helene one of the roughly 20% of adults suffering from chronic pain. As her symptoms worsened during her pregnancies and after a COVID-19 infection, Helene had to learn new ways to deal with both her illness and the public perception of chronic diseases. Since 2024, she has been hosting a podcast about chronic illnesses called CHRONISCH GUT and actively shares her journey with 10,000 followers on social media. Helene calls out gender bias with statements such as “Gender-sensitive medicine is not special treatment—it is better medicine for everyone.” and provides a glimpse into what it means to live with chronic pain every day.
