Grünenthal’s near-term science-based target has been officially validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This milestone confirms that our climate targets are in line with the most ambitious decarbonization trajectory recognised by the SBTi that will keep global temperature increase to 1.5°C

This milestone confirms our commitment to reducing Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 (vs. 2020 baseline), with 42% already achieved by 2024. It also reinforces our ambition to engage suppliers responsible for 74.1%* of emissions from purchased goods and services, as well as upstream transportation and distribution, to set their own validated science-based targets by 2028.

*N.B. percentage focuses specifically on the two categories required by SBTi: Purchased Goods & Services and Upstream Transportation & Distribution.

What This Means for Grünenthal

“The SBTi validation is a clear signal that we are turning ambition into action and also marks an important milestone in our sustainability journey. It confirms that our climate targets meet the highest standards of scientific integrity and reinforces the importance and relevance of our Planet strategy.”

Javier Martin

SVP Manufacturing LatAm & API and Global Manufacturing Operations

Across our company, teams are scaling efforts, from manufacturing sites to Procurement practices, to reduce emissions and embed sustainability into everyday decisions. Such efforts include:

- Prioritising gas reduction projects, like the installation of heat pumps in our Aachen HQ and Mitlödi manufacturing site.
- Fully transitioning to 100% renewable electricity across all five manufacturing sites.
- Actively engaging suppliers responsible for over two-thirds of our Scope 3 emissions to set science-based targets by 2028.

“Achieving our sustainability goals requires deep collaboration across the value chain, and our suppliers are essential to that effort. Our teams are actively partnering with suppliers to help them build understanding, set clear expectations, and support them on their decarbonisation journey.”

Elke Geysen

SVP Global Procurement and External Supply

Grünenthal is now part of a global group of companies driving ambitious corporate decarbonization, and we are already making significant progress: 42% of Scope 1 and Scope 2 targets were already achieved by 2024.

We look forward to the next steps in our climate journey to realise our validated targets and help shape lasting, positive impact for a brighter future for the next generation.
