Beyond the Ache:
Pain & Mental Health

with Emma Biggs

In the fourth episode of Beyond the Ache, we explore the often-misunderstood relationship between chronic pain, brain and mind. Together with cognitive neuroscientist Emma Biggs, we discover why pain is far more than a physical symptom, how it can shape identity and everyday life, and why psychology is an important piece of a holistic, individualised approach to pain.

About Emma Biggs

Emma Biggs is a science practitioner. As a trained cognitive neuroscientist, she is not only an expert in pain and its connection to the brain but also applies her scientific knowledge in practice by supporting people living with chronic pain as a health psychologist. This combination of research and practice provides her with a broad perspective on chronic pain and how it impacts daily life from a psychological perspective. She demonstrates that chronic pain is influenced by multiple factors and that there is no single answer to a complex problem like chronic pain.

Pain is just coming up, but it is beyond your control. You don’t want it; it is not getting you anything that you want in your life.
