Powered by sunshine: Grünenthal’s new solar power facility in Aachen
A special event on 28 August welcomed high-profile guests from politics and business to celebrate the start of operations for a new solar power plant at Grünenthal’s headquarters in Aachen, Germany. The future-facing facility has a nominal output of 1.9 MWp. It will cover 18,000m², which is equivalent to nearly 3 soccer fields. It brings together almost 4,000 solar modules weighing 116 tons, as well as enough cables to stretch 21 kilometres. That makes it the biggest solar power system in the city – and a big step forward for Grünenthal’s corporate sustainability strategy too.
Energy from the sun is now being harnessed by these photovoltaics and used to power our company’s headquarters. Any additional electricity that exceeds our demand will flow into the public power grid as green energy. Altogether, Grünenthal expects to reduce its CO2 emissions by around 366 tons per year by swapping fossil-derived energy for solar power in Aachen.
The start of operations for this facility is an important milestone for Grünenthal’s deep commitment to protecting the planet’s environment and climate. This includes our goal of reducing net emissions by 50 percent between 2020 and 2030. Together with our suppliers, customers and other stakeholders from every step in our value chain, we are taking proactive measures that contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future – in Aachen and everywhere else on our precious planet.
